Key Dates
One thing is for sure: The Arts calendar is a busy one. Granted, every year is different. But here is what prospective students thinking about their college application process can generally expect, with a focus on the timeline.
Unified Musical Theater College Auditions:
Unifieds. This is a rigorous program through which almost all top performing arts schools and conservatories assess thousands of prospective students every year. Students should have a list of schools they want to apply to by August, and then begin filming pre-screens for early acceptance by October. I recommend a 10-week session beginning in August, though some students do start later. Reach out anytime if you are contemplating applying and I can build you a customized audition plan.
Unifieds Application Process:
Each school has a different set of guidelines specific to the program applicants are applying for. They ask for different types of songs set in different eras, and for different lengths of time. Some ask for videos to be shot from a certain vantage points and for specific slates. This can all be confusing, so I like to make a shared document with each school and their requirements with lists of tasks and boxes to check.
Pre-Screens:
First: What is a pre-screen? A pre-screen is a video reel that some schools require — either an in-person audition at Unifieds or at the institution itself. If you are not used to the camera or auditioning this process can be very draining. I have successfully shot many of these and can make sure you are trained and come across with a great representation of your eagerness to attend the school. Song choice, head shots, and the way you introduce yourself in the video are all critical to being admitted to the next round. Note: At Unifieds you may be able to audition in person with schools that did not accept your pre-screen.
Applying to Summer Intensives:
A great way to improve quickly — outside of regular lessons with me — is to audition for Summer Intensives. There are hundreds of summer programs around the world that are valuable ways to explore your craft and make lifelong friends. I recommend starting these 1-5 week programs the summer going into high school. My students that have participated in summer intensives have typically been more prepared for college auditions. Some colleges even have summer intensives, and they are super helpful when selecting which programs you would like to attend.
Applying to summer intensives happens through video or — in the past — through live auditions. Auditions usually take place in January and February, and decisions are made in March. Schools look at how you spend your summers just like employers do, and they want to see you working on your craft. Resumes and head shots are required for nearly every audition.
